If you’re like most students abroad, Interlaken, Switzerland is on your list of must-visit places. You probably have all the standard activities planned between paragliding, skydiving, skiing, night-sledding, and hiking the Harder Klum…But if you’re anything like my friends and me, you’ll want to do some things off the beaten trail. Here are three ideas:
1.Travel outside of Interlaken
This may seem counter-intuitive, but taking a small trip outside of Interlaken could turn out to be one the highlights of your trip to the Swiss Alps! During my weekend adventure, my friends and I hopped on a train with no real destination in mind. We eventually ended up taking a gondola up to a small ski town called Lauterbrunnen, with the most amazing view. There, we stopped at a little restaurant for hot chocolate and homemade apple strudel! Pick a town on the map, hop on a train, and go! You won’t regret it!
2. Cozy up for dinner at Little Thai
You would never in a million years think Switzerland would have noteworthy Thai food, but place is amazing. From the outside, it doesn’t appear like much but inside it’s packed with people. You’ll immediately be overwhelmed with the intoxicating smell of incredible food. PRO TIP: make a reservation! Otherwise, you’ll have to get your food to go like we did. Nevertheless, if you love Thai food, you have to go here.
3. Order rösti or röschti
This traditional Swiss dish is a must during your stay in Interlaken and you’ll be able to find it at most restaurants around the town. The dish is basically a big hash brown but topped with customary Swiss cheese and different garnishes like bacon, tomatoes or other herbs of your preference. Think of it like a hash brown breakfast pizza! Many Swiss people consider rösti to be a national dish, so give it a try, it won’t disappoint!
