Since it’s the first full weekend in Florence for many of you, we thought we’d give you some fun and interesting facts about your new home for the next couple of months. Have a great first weekend in Italy, and Buon Weekend (and thank god its Friday!)

Fun Fact #1:

They say all roads lead to Rome, but Florence was actually the first city in all of Europe to have paved roads. The first roads were built in 1339.

Fun Fact #2:

The Duomo in Florence is the 3rd largest in the WORLD (behind St.Peter’s Basilica in Rome and St. Paul’s in London)

Fun Fact #3:

The Ponte Vecchio is the only bridge in Florence that survived World War II. Hitler said it was too beautiful to destroy.

Fun Fact #4:

Gucci was founded in Florence in 1921 (Guccio Gucci, the founder of Gucci, was Florentine.)

Fun Fact #5:

Dante Aligheri, a native Florentine, is credited with creating the standard Italian language that the entire country uses to this day in his native Florentine dialect.
